Director Michael Bay will helm the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film adaptation of Ubisoft Montreal's 2003 game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, movie news site reports. The site claims to have confirmed with Walt Disney Studios that Bay is expected to direct, though the plan does not appear to be finalized. Bay is currently directing the live-action Transformers film adaptation. If he does sign on for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, shooting will commence after Transformers wraps, with a release set for summer 2009. Action movie mega-producer Bruckheimer frequently calls on Bay to man the director's post in his films, with the pair having previously collaborated on Bad Boys, Bad Boys II, Armageddon, and Pearl Harbor.

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner, who also wrote and designed the under appreciated 1997 nonlinear adventure game The Last Express and has written and directed several film documentaries, provided the first draft of the film's screenplay. Jeffrey Nachmanoff, a screenwriter on The Big Gig and The Day After Tomorrow, is handling further revisions. The film's story is said to be loosely based on the game's, retaining the elements of the evil vizier seeking to control the sands of time, and the presence of the princess-turned-sidekick Farah. The adventurous prince will team up with the rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world …

The film’s executive producer is screen writer John August ( Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) who has collaborated with talented Tim Burton. Interestingly on his blog he has expressed interest in seeing the Prince eventually be played by an unknown Persian (Iranian) actor, and has expressed his knowledge that Persia is not Babylon, thus responding to some critics by fans on his blog in regard to the various choices for the role of the Prince. However according to Australian publication Hyper, Australian actor Charlie Clausen has signed on to play the lead role of the Persian prince; Clausen is also listed in the film's IMDb entry. No casting information however has been officially confirmed.



Given the online outrage expressed in regard to the latest Hollywood Block Buster 300 one can only suppose that Hollywood Studio’s may be sensitive to constructive suggestions in portraying the Persian Prince and the computer generated environment in which his adventures take place that is : Persia in the Middle Ages.

The Imdb online database suggested several Iranian actors for the role including unknown David K. Zandi and David Zahedian ( Pirates of the Caribbean) possible choices but Disney Studio never confirmed or denied the possibility. Some Iranian bloggers and film fans have suggested the desire to see Iranian Star Mohammad Reza Golzar in the title role who looks strikingly like the Ubisoft Computer generated Persian hero.



The movie is due in 2008 or 2009 latest and Pre-production is said to have started.



Prince of Persia is said to be one of the most ambitious Jerry Bruckheimer projects given the worldwide mega success of the Ubisoft Game and the increasing demand to see the screen adaptation take off.

این فیلم قرار است بر اساس بازی موفقی به همین نام که در اواخر دهه 80 میلادی به یکی از محبوب ترین بازی های کامپیوتری جهان بدل شده بود، ساخته شود.

جری بروک هایمر Jerry Bruckheimer تهیه کننده این فیلم در گفتگویی مطبوعاتی به سایت کولایدر Collider.com اظهار داشته است که فکر می کند کارگردان بسیار جالب توجهی را استخدام کرده ان د.

او می گوید: « مایک نیو و ل Mike Newell که یکی از فیلمهای هری پاتر Harry Potter را کارگردانی کرده بسیار مبتکر و تیزهوش است و کاری واقعا مخصوص را درست خواهد کرد و ما تازه داریم شروع میکنیم. فیلمنامه ای داریم و تازه کار ساخت شکل آن را آغاز کرده ایم تا کاری منحصر بفرد و جدید باشد. »

اما جوردن مکنر Jordan Mechner برنامه ریز و بازیساز مجموعه بازیهای کامپیوتری «شاهزاده ایران» میگوید آرزوی ساخت این فیلم را بیست سال است که در سر داشته است.

وی در گفتگو با سایت گاماسوترا Gamasutra.com میگوید اولین نسخه فیلمنامه «شاهزاده ایران» را که چند بار در آن بازنگری شد ، ظرف حدود یکسال و نیم نوشت و تکمیل آن که با اصلاحات دیگری ب ه دست چهار فیلمنامه نویس همراه بود و آخرین آنها جف ناکمانوف Jeff Nachmanoff ، سناریست

The day after tomorrow بود ، دو سال دیگر ب ه طول انجامید ، اما در این روند، ساختار فیلمنامه اولیه، طرح داستان و شخصیت ها دستخوش تغییر چندانی نشدند.

جوردن مکنر میگوید اگر فیلم را در یک جمله خلاصه کنیم به اولین بازی مجموعه «شاهزاده ایران» بنام Sands of time ، شن ای زمان شبیه به نظر می رسد اما در واقع صحنه به صحنه کاملا متفاوت است.

وی اظهار می دارد نمونه ما فیلم های حماسی کلاسیک و سراپا ماجرایی حادثه ای است همراه با مزاح و داستانی عاشقانه و پر از شخصیتهای بیادماندنی.

جوردن مکنر با اشاره به اینکه فیلم در مرحله پیش از تولید قرار دارد و اینکه کمپانی والت دیسنی آنرا ارائه خواهد کرد همچنین میگوید نوول تصویری «شاهزاده ایران» را بپایان برده و اینکار به زیبایی درآمده است.

وی می افزاید کتاب تصویری «شاهزاده ایران» که داستانش بکلی متفاوت از بازیها یا فیلم آن است سال آینده توسط First Second Books منتشر خواهد شد.

اما مایک نیوال، آخرین کارگردانی که برای ساخت فیلم «شاهزاده ایران» بکار گرفته شده است داستان این فیلم را عالی، بسیار هیجان انگیز و شدیدا عاشقانه توصیف میکند و میگوید این داستان شما را به جایی میبرد که هرگز در آنجا نبوده اید.

مایک نیوال اظهار داشته است با این داستان کارهای بسیاری صورت خواهد گرفت زیرا ماجرا در یکهزار و سیصد سال پیش روی میدهد.

وی میگوید این یک داستان عظیم عشقی خواهد بود در برابر خطر و سرنوشت جهان.

مایک نیوال در گفتگو با ریلزچنل Reelzchannel.com میگوید من عاشق «شاهزاده ایران» هستم و به جری بروکهایمر واقعا علاقمندم و فکر میکنم ساخت یک فیلم بزرگ ماجرایی عاشقانه برای او کاری عظیم خواهد بود زیرا این کاری نیست که او بطور معمول انجام دهد.

بازیهای «شاهزاده ایران» که از سال 1988 میلادی به بازار عرضه شدند در ردیف موفقترین و پرفروشترین بازیهای کامپیوتری قرار داشته اند و جوردن مکنر در آخرین سری این بازیها نشان داده است که از تاریخ و فرهنگ ایران بی اطلاع نیست.

انتظار میرود فیلم «شاهزاده ایران»جایگاه پرفروشترین محصول آینده سینمای هالیوود را بدست آورد و با ارائه فیلمهای دیگری به یک مجموعه فیلم سه گانه یا تریلوژی تبدیل گردد ضمن اینکه پیش بینی میشود فرآورده ها و کالاهای آن چون اسباب بازی و اقلام دیگر سود سرشاری را نصیب سازندگان این فیلم سازند.

'Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride.' –Jordan Mechner It is one of the most anticipated film projects in recent years and one that has been subject to much rumors, counter rumors and exaggerated speculations by fans and studio executives alike. The latest major Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean I, II, III, Pearl Harbor) production 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,' is finally set to start shooting. After such known Box Office pretenders as Orlando Bloom ( Troy, Pirates of the Caribbean) or Rodrigo Santoro (who played Persian King Xerxes in 300 ) to virtually unknown ethnic candidates like Iranian model/actors David K. Zandi and David Zahedian, the producers have finally officially announced that BrokeBack Mountain awarding star Jake Gyllenhaal will finally star in 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,' Disney's feature adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game.



Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a third-person action adventure video game. It was released on November 6, 2003 and is a continuation of the landmark MS-DOS and Macintosh game series Prince of Persia, created by Jordan Mechner in 1989. Developed for the PC, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, and later a 2D version for the Game Boy Advance and mobile phones, The Sands of Time was a major hit. The success of The Sands of Time led to two sequels, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, in 2004 and 2005, respectively. The Screen adaptation of the latter will certainly depend on the success or failure of The Sands of Time that ambitions to become the next Hollywood Blockbuster Franchise.



In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan (which mean’s “Story” in Persian), a young prince in 6th century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (known as Farah in the Game is played by the latest James Bond Girl Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Plot (Subject to Possible Change During Production):



“Passing through India en route to Azad (which means Freedom in Persian), King Shahraman and his son, the Prince of Persia, defeat the powerful Maharajah of India with the promise of honor and glory. After looting the city and capturing a giant hourglass full of sand, a mysterious dagger, and the Maharajah's daughter Tamina along with other treasures, they continue to Azad. A dying Vizier, who had betrayed the Maharajah and aided King Shahraman in return for a share of the spoils, demands to have the dagger, as he was promised his choice of the Maharajah's treasures. But Shahraman refuses to take the dagger from his son, who captured it first. Denied also the hourglass itself, of which was to go to the sultan of Azad as a gift, the Vizier who wishes to harness the power of the Sands in the hourglass for himself, making him an immortal god and giving him control over time itself, tricks the Prince into opening the hourglass in Azad. When the Prince uses the dagger to unleash the Sands of Time from the hourglass, the Sands destroy the kingdom and turn all living beings into hideous sand creatures. Only the Prince, the Vizier, and Princess Tamina, the kidnapped daughter of the Maharajah, remain unchanged due to their possessions; the Prince's dagger, the Vizier's staff, and Tamina's medallion (there are a handful of unimportant survivors, such as two people who escape with Tamina and a guard who assists you during the Azad defense system puzzle, who is possessed after his part).



On a journey to repair the damage he has caused, the Prince teams with Tamina to return the Sands of Time to the hourglass by using the Dagger of Time, which also gives the Prince limited control over the flow of time. Before they reach their destination, the Prince and Tamina form a romantic relationship. However, the Prince knows that Tamina has every reason to hate him for conquering her people, and he suspects that Tamina plans to steal the Dagger of Time from him. While the Prince sleeps, Tamina does at a later time take the Dagger, as well as his sword, and attempts to return the Sands to the hourglass herself, leaving only her medallion behind with the Prince. When the Prince catches up with her, she is being attacked by sand creatures, and is knocked into the hourglass chamber through a hole in the floor. The prince tries to grab her hand, but only manages to grab the Dagger of Time by it's blade, causing him severe pain. Tamina, seeing that he won't let go of the Dagger chooses to do so herself and falls to her death. Afterwards, the Prince uses the Dagger to return the Sands to the hourglass, and the timeline reverts to the point prior to the battle against the Maharajah. As a result, the relationship between Tamina and himself is a memory that only he possesses. However, the Prince still has the Dagger in his possession, even in the past. He goes to find Tamina, to warn her of the Vizier's treachery before the Sands are released, and to give her the Dagger of Time. At this point, it is revealed all of the Prince's narration in the menus and cut-scenes from the game were actually him recounting his adventures to Tamina, in an attempt to warn her. But as the Prince shares his epic story with her, he is confronted by the evil Vizier, who still yearns for the Dagger, and eternal life. He plans to kills Tamina and blame her murder on him.



After defeating the Vizier, and preventing the opening of the hourglass, the Prince offers the Dagger to Tamina. She questions why he needed to invent such a fantastic story. After he responds with a coldly received kiss, he rewinds time a moment and instead agrees with her, that it was just a story. As he leaves, she asks him his name, and is left dumbfounded when he tells her to call him 'Kakolookiyam', the name of a fairy-tale hero that Tamina's mother told her stories about as a child and that only she would know of. (In the previous timeline, Tamina had explained the significance of this word to the Prince.”

As shooting for the first movie Sands of Time based on the most popular computer game of the 1990’s and this decade, Prince of Persia, begins at the Legendary British PineWood Studio's (under the helm of British director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean,Pearl Harbor)) its major Star, Jake Gyllenhaal, is training hard to take on the role of the Persian Prince: Dastan. A particularly exciting role that will nevertheless require physical dexterity from all involved: actors and stunt doubles alike.



For those familiar with the game this is no secret: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time combines exploration and combat to create a unique synthesis. Both elements make use of the Prince's acrobatic capability and agility. Throughout much of the game, the player must attempt to traverse the palace by running across walls, ascending or descending chasms by jumping back and forth between walls, avoiding traps, making other types of well-timed leaps, solving puzzles, and using discovered objects to progress. Needless to say that the major protagonist played by Gyllenhaal in the motion picture adaptation will certainly have to live up to the same expectations and not just with the help of digital effects wizardry but also live action.



We will still have to wait till June 19, 2009 date of the movie’s official release to make up our own opinion on the award winning Star of BrokeBack Mountain and Zodiac capacity to live up to the expectations of the computer game’s staunchest aficianados.

What is certain is that the story set in medieval Persia, of an adventurous prince will be one of the most expected motion pictures next year. A story in which Gyllenhaal in the title role of the Persian Prince will team up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world Which is why after the prince was tricked by a dying Vizier to unleash the Sands of Time that turns out to destroy a kingdom and transforms its populace into ferocious demons. In his effort to save his own kingdom and redeem his fatal mistake, it's up to the prince and the princess to return the sands to the hourglass by using the Dagger of Time, which also gives him a limited control over the flow of time.

Little is revealed as to the Production itself but what is certain is that 2008/2009 will be the year of A Persian Prince In the Making for one of the most spotted and hottest Hollywood Stars of this millennium.

First extensive look at the Prince of Persia movie has come via ABC, in a feature that interviews PoP producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The footage, which bears the text ‘this film is not yet rated’, could be the snippets of an unfinished trailer; it appears to be edited in a fashion that matches a trailer.

We get to see Jake Gyllenhaal training to become the Prince, Ben Kingsley, numerous shots of Jake battling topless, the expansive Moroccan set and Gemma Arterton as Tamina.

It promises to be a “Great adventure and wonderful action” says producer Jerry Bruckheimer:
